"Turn Information technology On Again"
| ||||
"Turn It On Over again" is a single past the English language rock band Genesis, from their 1980 album Duke. Information technology reached number viii in the U.k. Singles Nautical chart,[ii] becoming the ring's second top ten hit. The lyrics, by Mike Rutherford,[iii] concern a man who does nothing more than scout goggle box. He becomes obsessed with the people he watches on it, assertive them to exist his friends.
The song is featured on the Flash FM station playlist in the game Grand Theft Car: Vice Metropolis Stories.
Background [edit]
"Turn Information technology On Once more" was built from leftovers from projects by each member: The second set of verses was conceived past Tony Banks for A Curious Feeling: "We kind of put [Rutherford's riff] – the bit he didn't use on Smallcreep's Day, curiously enough – with the scrap I didn't utilize on A Curious Feeling, and put these two together. We made information technology much more than rocky; both bits became much more rocky. My scrap was a chip more epic, and Mike's bit was a flake slower and a bit more heavy metal. And so Phil gave information technology a much more than straightforward drum office; possibly neither of us would have thought that nosotros would want that on that fleck [...] We put on one or two other $.25, likewise, that ended upwards from there".[iv]
The song is characterised past a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for pop music merely common in the band'south progressive rock back catalogue. The verse/chorus sections alternate time signatures, six
four to seven
4 ( 13
iv ), while the intro and span sections are in four
4 and 5
iv ( 9
iv ). The vocal – written more often than not by Rutherford, with assist from Phil Collins – was originally much slower. Rutherford explains on the Songbook DVD: "I had this riff [plays lead riff on guitar], but at the time I was playing it like this: [plays slower]. And Phil said, 'Why don't you try it in a faster speed?' and and so he said to me, 'Do yous realize it is in 13
viii ?' and I said, 'What do yous hateful, it's in 13? It's in 4
4 , isn't information technology?' 'No, information technology's 13.'"
Collins confirms: "You lot can't trip the light fantastic toe to information technology. You see people trying to dance to it every now and again. They get on the off beat out but they don't know why".[5] Tony Banks adds: "You can't trip the light fantastic toe or clap forth to it because of that time signature. When we play it live, you tin can always see the audition getting caught out."[6]
"Turn Information technology On Again" has been a favourite at Genesis's shows. Consequently, the group's 1999 compilation Plough It On Again: The Hits and its 2007 expanded reissue, subtitled The Tour Edition, were named after it, as was the band'south 2007 Turn It On Again: The Bout reunion bout. In the 1980s, the band would attach a medley of 1960s pop songs (referred to by the band as the "Blues Brothers" medley, as the first song was "Everybody Needs Somebody to Dear"). The song would be returned to its album form for the We Tin't Dance tour and the band would later regard the medley as a poor decision.[ citation needed ] Peter Gabriel played drums when he reunited with his sometime bandmates at 1982's Six of the Best show and plant himself baffled past its time signatures. "It was typical Peter: 'Oh, I can play this'," observed Tony Banks. "But once he started playing, he kept looking effectually going, Oh fuck! 'Plough It On Again' does funny things – information technology's truly a Genesis vocal."[6]
Originally written and recorded in the central of B Major, it was transposed down to A for the 2007 bout and further downwardly to Yard for the 2021 tour to compensate for the lowering of Collins' voice.
The Duke Suite [edit]
"Turn information technology on Once more" was originally a section of a long suite written past the band that was split into individual songs before it was released. At the time, was just an interlude between the preceding and side by side sections of the suite.
